Fall 2018 Southern Minnesota Nurses Expo

Registration is now open for the Fall 2018 Southern Minnesota Nurses Expo, which will be held on October 30 from 8:00 AM to 4:15 PM at the Courtyard by Marriott Conference Center in Mankato. The Expo brochure, which includes registration information, is below.

This year’s presentations include the following (subject to change):

A discounted rate for registration is available until October 16. If you pay by check ahead of time, please indicate somewhere on the form whether you want your check deposited right away or held until the event. (If nothing is noted to the contrary, we will deposit checks on receipt.) 7.2 CEUs (nursing) or 6 clock hours (other disciplines) are available.

Speaker: Karissa Borchert, MSW, LGSW, Community Liaison, Home Health Care, Inc.

Karissa graduated from Minnesota State University, Mankato with a Bachelor of Science in Psychology and completed her Masters of Social Work (MSW) at the University of Minnesota. She has worked in a variety of social service and medical settings, most frequently with adults and elders. She also has extensive experience working with seniors facing the challenges of substance abuse and their families.

Sunflower Communities is hosting a presentation about identifying and preventing substance abuse in seniors. There is no charge and lunch is provided. In addition, 1.0 CEU is available for nurses and social workers. Space is limited, so please RSVP to Theresa Nygaard (Theresa.Nygaard@sunflowercommunities.org) as soon as possible. Marit Peterson, J.D. is the program director for the Minnesota Elder Justice Center.  Before joining MEJC, Marit practiced Elder Law in the Twin Cities metro.  She is also adjunct faculty in philosophy at Augsburg College, where she teaches ethics and bioethics in the Augsburg Adult Undergraduate program.  Marit currently participates in the Minnesota State Bar Association’s Elder Law Section on the Governing Council, and Probate and Trust Section. This presentation will explore ways to start conversations within our own and our clients’ families, particularly related to financial safety and decision-making. We’ll examine best practices to prevent financial exploitation, and some strategies to use to discuss common challenges faced by families around financial decision-making.

1.2 Contact Hours provided for nursing in accordance with the Minnesota Board of Nursing requirements. Other disciplines may submit to their boards for one (1) contact hour.
